Collection: Sourdough Starters
Each of our starters are named after a personal book hero that inspired and shaped me. As a child, I obsessed over cooking, books and series. They allowed my imagination to run wild into another world. I was either watching Julia Child or the Food network and had a book in my hand.They gave me knowledge, peace, and a hunger for more. It made me think outside of the box and outside of the southern town I was raised in.
My mother is THE best cook I know. She makes the best Mac n cheese and black eyed peas I have ever tasted. She makes THE best banana pudding you will ever taste. Nothing compares. You can try and you will fail. She raised me with a cast iron skillet and encouraged my love of cooking. When I got married, my momma gave me her granny’s cast iron skillet that had made her and her cousins gravy and biscuits as children. It is to this day, the best gift I have ever received. I just know my mom’s Granny would smile knowing that I make my son’s sourdough English muffins every weekend in that same pan. They just don’t taste right if they aren’t!
My mom also instilled my love for reading. Anytime after bedtime, which was a feat, there are 5 of us, my mom could be found in her rocking chair with a book. We were always at the book store. Looking for new series, it didn’t matter the topic, she encouraged me to read. I was a bit of a nerd and I fully embrace that!
The south was none to accepting of a particular “wizarding world” series that came out and of course our church was on fire about it. My blessed mother snuck and bought my books and I would hide in the closet and read them when my grandma was over…Are you really from the Bible Belt if you haven’t hidden a book or two?! While I was lost in the wizarding world, Hagrid showed us the true meaning of what it is to be a gentle giant. He was Harry’s shepherd. Did I mention I am OBSESSED with my German shepherd? That’s for another time.
Purchase Hagrid here: The first time I saw Julia Child, I was enamored. She was making a whole roast chicken. The chicken was trussed and gorgeously browned after being slathered in butter and served with a herby pan sauce. I can still remember the episode and the sound of her voice. It impacted me. I of course needed her cookbook at 8, my mother indulged me, even with all of the recipes that I could not have even possibly attempted at that time. I hope my food has made the $40.00 she shelled out at that time worth it😇. I use that technique to this day and its a family favorite. Julia was funny, she was witty and she was her own boss! She truly wanted to show us how to technically cook. She wanted to teach us French food in an attainable way. She wanted us to taste good food! She inspired a lot of people to want to cook better and went to great efforts to write her recipes in a way that we could understand. Julia insisted that it had to be step-by-step and that it had to work with attainable ingredients. She gave us the secret sauce! I want to do the same with Sourdough for you! I am no expert, but I do believe I love bread just about as much as Julia loved French food.
